The single most useful thing to know
Most people believe they need the registration document in their own name before any insurer will cover them. That is not true. The signed transfer form — the certificat de cession — together with the detachable coupon from the seller's registration document, is enough to take out cover. You can be insured in minutes, standing in the seller's driveway, and deal with the registration afterwards.
| When | What | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Same day, before you drive | Insurance — certificate by e-mail in minutes | You, online, or us |
| Within 15 days | The seller declares the sale and gives you the transfer code | The seller |
| Within one month | Registration in your name — a provisional certificate is issued at once | You, or us for you |
| A few working days later | The definitive card arrives by secure post | The national printing office |
What the seller must give you
| Document | What to check |
|---|---|
| The old registration document | Struck through, marked vendu le with the date, the time and the seller s signature |
| Certificate of transfer (Cerfa 15776) | Completed and signed by both of you |
| The transfer code | Issued when the seller declares the sale online — without it nothing moves |
| Administrative status certificate | The non-gage. Must be less than 15 days old |
| Roadworthiness test | Less than 6 months old for a vehicle over 4 years |
What it costs
There is no flat fee. The bill is built line by line, and the largest line depends on your region and the vehicle's fiscal horsepower (chevaux fiscaux, CV).
| Line | What it is | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Y.1 — regional tax | Fiscal horsepower × the regional rate per CV | €43 to €60 per CV |
| Y.2 — vocational training tax | Commercial vehicles only, by gross weight | €34 to €285 |
| Y.3 — CO2 penalty | New or imported vehicles above the emissions threshold | From 108 g/km |
| Y.4 — handling fee | Fixed | €11 |
| Y.5 — delivery fee | Secure postage of the document | €2.76 |
For a 7 CV car, the regional tax alone ranges from roughly €300 to over €400 depending on where you live. Some regions grant partial or full relief for clean vehicles.
Six things that get a file rejected
- The old document is not struck through properly. The line, the words vendu le, the date, the time and the signature — one missing and the file comes back.
- The seller never declared the sale. No declaration, no transfer code, no progress. It is the most common blockage and the hardest, because it depends on someone else.
- The status certificate shows a hold. Finance not cleared, unpaid fines, a damaged-vehicle procedure.
- The roadworthiness test is out of date.
- Names do not match between the transfer form, the proof of address and the licence. A married name, a missing accent or an old address are enough.
- The car came from abroad. Different route: you also need the tax clearance and usually the certificate of conformity. See imported vehicles.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to register a car I just bought in France ?
One month from the date of sale. After that you risk a fine, and reselling becomes complicated because the vehicle is still not in your name.
Can I drive before the registration document is in my name ?
Yes, provided you are insured. That is exactly what short-term insurance is for: the signed transfer form plus the coupon from the seller's registration document is enough to take out cover, in minutes, 24/7.
Do I need insurance to file the registration ?
Yes, the vehicle must be insured. It is one reason our customers take out cover on the day of purchase, before starting the registration at all.
What must the seller hand over ?
The old registration document struck through and signed with the date and time; the signed transfer form; the transfer code from their online declaration; an administrative status certificate less than 15 days old; and the roadworthiness test if the vehicle is over 4 years.
How much does it cost ?
There is no flat fee. The main line is the regional tax: fiscal horsepower multiplied by your region's rate, between €43 and €60 per CV in 2026. Add an €11 handling fee, a €2.76 delivery fee, and where applicable the vocational training tax for commercial vehicles or the CO2 penalty.
The seller has not declared the sale. What now ?
This is the most common blockage: without their declaration there is no transfer code and the file cannot move. Chase them — the declaration takes minutes online. Keep your signed transfer form: it proves the date.
Is the provisional certificate enough to drive ?
Yes, it allows you to drive while the definitive card is printed and posted. One limit: a short-term insurance policy cannot end after the provisional certificate's expiry date.
What if the car was imported ?
The route is different: you also need the tax clearance and, very often, the European certificate of conformity. We handle both.
