What is border insurance?
Border insurance (or transit insurance) is short-term insurance that covers a vehicle when crossing a border, entering France or Europe or driving in transit. It is ideal for a foreign-registered vehicle, an imported vehicle during paperwork, or a one-off trip.

- The green card is your proof — Border police and the destination registration office ask for the carte verte. It shows the plate, the driver and the territories where cover applies, so keep it in the car.

Frequently asked questions
I bought a car in France and want to drive it home to Romania. What insurance do I need?
You need border insurance, not a standard French policy. It comes with a green card valid for France and the EU countries you cross on temporary WW export plates, so you are legal the whole way to Romania.
What is border insurance exactly?
It is short-term motor cover built for taking a car out of France across a border. You get a green card showing the plate, the driver and the territories covered, for anywhere from 1 to 90 days.
What is a green card or carte verte, and why does it matter?
The green card is the international proof of insurance. Border officers and the registration office in your home country ask to see it, so it must name your temporary plate and the countries on your route.
Do I need temporary WW plates to export the car?
Yes. A car leaving France for good runs on provisional WW plates rather than the seller's old ones. We insure the vehicle on those plates. The plate process itself is explained on our temporary WW plates page.
Can I insure a car that is already registered abroad while it passes through France?
We can cover a foreign-plated vehicle for the days it transits France on the way somewhere else. Tell us the plate, the route and the number of days and we set the green card accordingly.
How many days of cover can I take?
Between 1 and 90 days, and it is renewable if the trip or the paperwork runs long. Buyers usually take a week or two to cover the drive plus a margin for delays.
Does this policy let me keep driving the car once I am home in Serbia or Bulgaria?
No. Border insurance covers the export trip and the transit, not everyday driving once the car is registered at home. For domestic use you register and insure the car locally.
I am driving the car to another EU country like Germany, not exporting outside the EU. Am I covered?
You are. The green card covers driving within the European Union, so reaching Germany, Spain or Italy after a French purchase is exactly the kind of trip this policy is for.
What driving licence do I need to buy this?
A French or foreign licence held for more than two years is accepted. If your licence is from outside the EU, we also need a valid residence permit, or a passport carrying entry stamps on file.
How fast do I get the documents so I can start driving?
Once you subscribe online and your details check out, the attestation and green card are emailed to you. Print the green card and keep it in the car before you set off.
I want to drive the car to Morocco or Algeria. Is that the same product?
The route and paperwork differ for the Maghreb, so we handle that separately on our export to North Africa page. Start there if North Africa is your destination rather than the EU.
The French registration is not finished yet. Can I still get border insurance?
Cover is tied to the vehicle and the export plates, which come from the carte grise and sale documents. If the French title is still in progress, sort that first via our vehicle registration page, then come back for the green card.
