Where your green card stops
The green card — the international motor insurance card — carries on its back the list of countries where your policy applies. The ones crossed out are not covered. Many drivers only read that list at the border post.
Seven countries come up every time: Albania, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Tunisia and Türkiye. Depending on the insurer they are crossed out by default, or covered only once expressly activated. Without that, you are driving uninsured from the moment you cross the border — and the fine is not the real risk. The accident is.
You keep your French plates
This is the question we are asked most often, so here is the answer straight away: your car stays registered in France and travels on its French plates the whole way, right to your door. Nobody takes them off you at the border.
The vehicle enters under the temporary admission regime: customs in the country of arrival record the entry, and the vehicle must leave again before the granted period runs out. That is a different thing from a permanent export, where the vehicle comes off the French register and is given local plates — there, yes, the plates change. If you are driving out and back, that is not your situation.
And that is exactly why this cover exists: a French-plated car driving in Morocco, Tunisia or Türkiye needs a certificate that is valid there, and your green card does not cover those countries.
The permitted durations and entry formalities are set by the customs authority of the destination country, not by us. Check them before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
Will I have to change plates when I arrive?
No. The vehicle keeps its French registration from departure to arrival. It enters under temporary admission on its own plates and must leave before the period granted by local customs expires. Changing registration only applies to a permanent export, which is a separate procedure.
Why is my green card not enough?
The international green card covers a fixed list of countries. Morocco, Tunisia, Türkiye, Albania, North Macedonia, Moldova and Azerbaijan are not on it — or are only on it if your insurer has expressly activated them. Without that, you are uninsured from the moment you cross the border.
How long does an answer take?
